Thanks for looking, everyone. Strangely enough, my Roman cavalry units have in the past performed very well when I have graded them the worst. They always seem to do better as militia level medium horse than as veteran heavies. Especially against cataphracts. Nobody knows why - it's just one of life's little mysteries. We'll just have to see if this tradition continues with the new units!
