Army Lists

Lydian
  • Nobles: 12 Elite Heavy Cavalry with spears
  • Lydians: 2 units of 18 Veteran Medium Cavalry with spears
  • Lydians: 3 units of 8 Veteran Light Cavalry with javelins
  • Ionians: 2 units of 36 Militia Grade Heavy Infantry with spears
  • Lydian Foot: 2 units of 48 Veteran Medium Infantry with spears

  • Polyglot: 4 units of 12 Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • 2 units of 10 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with bows
  • 2 units of 11 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with javelins
The Ionians Receive partial protection against missiles because of their hoplite panoply.  The Egyptians represent marines and also receive partial protection because of their large mantlet shields.  The single unit of Noble Heavy Cavalry represents the "lancers" so feared by the Persians; in the event, they were neutralised by the Persian use of camels.

  Athenian
  • Cavalry: 2 units of 12 Militia Grade Medium Cavalry with spears
  • Thracian Light Horse: 2 units of 8 Veteran Light Cavalry with javelins
  • Elite Hoplites: 24 Elite Heavy Infantry with spears
  • Hoplites: 4 units of 36 Veteran Heavy Infantry with spears
  • Inferior Hoplites: 2 units of 36 Militia Grade Heavy Infantry with spears
  • Thracians: 12 Impetuous Veteran Light Infantry with Rhomphaia
  • Peltasts: 12 Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • Psiloi: 4 units of 8 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with javelins
  • Cretans or Athenians: 12 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with bows
This list represents all of the troop types available to Athens during the Persian wars; it could also be used for the Pelopponnesian War.  All of the hoplites count partially protected against missiles.

  Spartan
  • Greek Cavalry: 2 units of 12 Militia Grade Medium Cavalry with spears
  • Thracians: 2 units of 8 Veteran Light Cavalry with javelins
  • Spartans: 4 units of 36 Elite Heavy Infantry with spears
  • Perioikoi: 2 units of 36 Veteran Heavy Infantry with spears
  • Peltasts: 12 Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • Helots: 4 units of 10 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with javelins
  • Rhodians: 10 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with slings
This list pretty much speaks for itself.  The Spartans are not subtle, but the elite hoplites make them extremely powerful.  All of the Heavy Infantry have partial missile protection.

 Theban
  • Cavalry: 2 units of 12 Militia Grade Medium Cavalry with spears
  • Sacred Band: 16 Legendary Heavy Infantry with spears
  • Hoplites: 3 units of 36 Veteran Heavy Infantry with spears

  • Peltasts: 4 units of 12 Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • Cretans: 11 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with Bows
  • Rhodians: 11 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with slings
This is the "vanilla" list.  Players wishing to simulate the tactics of Epaminondas against the other Greeks may change one phalanx by increasing its numbers past the normal maximum of 48 figures. Replace the three types of massed infantry above with:
  • Lead: 64 Veteran Heavy Infantry with spears (includes the Sacred Band at the forefront)
  • Centre: 2 units of 36 Veteran Heavy Infantry with spears
  • Rearmost: 3 units of 36 Veteran Medium Infantry with spears
  • reduce the Cretans and Rhodians by two figures each
The large lead unit deploys in a massed column eight figures wide.  All of the heavy infantry count partial protection against missiles.

 Pyrrhus In Italy
  • Macedonians: 12 Elite Heavy Cavalry with spears
  • Greeks: 18 Veteran Medium Cavalry with spears
  • Tarentines: 2 units of 8 Veteran Light Cavalry with javelins
  • Two units each of two Indian Elephants
  • Phalanx: 3 units of 36 Veteran Heavy Infantry with pikes
  • Tarentines: 2 units of 48 Veteran Medium Infantry with pikes
  • Peltasts: 4 units of 12 Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • Skirmishers: 2 units of 10 Veterans with javelins
Pontic
  • Pontic Nobles: 18 Veteran Heavy Cavalry with spears
  • Rhoxolani: 18 Veteran Heavy Cavalry with spears
  • Armenians: 18 Veteran Cataphracts
  • Light Horse: 3 units of 8 Veteran Light Cavalry with javelins
  • Brazen Shields: 2 units of 32 Veteran Heavy Infantry with pikes
  • Galatians: 3 units of 36 Veteran Warriors in close formation
  • Thureophoroi: 2 units of 12 Superior Quality Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • Peltasts: 2 units of 12 Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • Skirmishers: 2 units of 12 Veterans with bows
  • Skirmishers: 3 units of 8 Veterans with javelins
For the later army, replace the two pike units with two units of 36 Imitation Legionaries as Veteran Medium Infantry with pila and reduce the skirmish infantry component a little.  There is also the option to amalgamate the Thureophoroi into one unit of close formation Medium Infantry; again, reduce the Skirmishers to compensate.  Thureophoroi were capable of fighting in close or loose formation, but the decision must be made prior to battle.

 Armenian
  • 5 units of 18 Veteran Cataphracts
  • 2 units of 12 Veteran Light Cavalry with javelins
  • Iberians: 2 units of 36 Veteran Medium Infantry with spears
  • Phalanx: 2 units of 32 Veteran Medium Infantry with pikes
  • Hillmen: 4 units of 18 Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • Skirmish Infantry: 2 units of 10 Veterans with javelins
  • Skirmish Infantry: 13 veterans with bows
For the later army, replace the two phalanx units with two units of 36 Imitation Legionaries: Veteran Medium Infantry with pila.  To compensate, remove one unit of Hillmen and remove two skirmisher archers.

 Spanish

  •  2 units of 18 Veteran Medium Cavalry with spears
  • 4 units of 8 Veteran Light Cavalry with javelins
  • Celtiberians: 2 units of 36 Veteran Warriors in loose formation
  • Scutarii: 3 units of 36 Veteran Medium Infantry with pila
  • Caetrati: 4 units of 18 Superior Quality Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • Youths: 3 units of 11 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with javelins
  • Balearics: 2 units of 10 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with slings
Caesarean Roman
  • Caesar's bodyguard: 12 Veteran German Heavy Cavalry with spears
  • Spanish Cavalry: 18 Veteran Medium Cavalry with spears
  • Spanish Light Horse: 3 units of 8 Veteran Light Cavalry with javelins
  • 2 Legions, each comprising 10 cohorts of 8 Veteran Heavy Infantry with pila
  • 1 partial Legion: 4 cohorts of 8 Elite Heavy Infantry with pila
  • Illyrians: 12 Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • Balearics: 8 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with slings
  • Skirmishers: 2 units of 9 veteran Skirmish Infantry with javelins
Notes
  • The Germans may operate directly under Caesar's command, outwith the normal rules for army command structure.  Caesar can do this because he counts as a Great Commander.
  • Legions are very tough and well drilled.  A cohort may change from column to line or vice versa once per battle.  One cohort may also reinforce another, effectively making a single 16-figure unit.  A single or reinforced cohort is destroyed only when completely wiped out, and it is only at this point that any friends would take morale tests.
  • Destroyed cohorts do not count towards army morale until the whole legion is destroyed, which occurs at the end of a turn in which the legion has taken the requisite number of hits in total.  For this purpose, a legion counts as a single 80-figure unit (or 32 in the case of the smaller detachment).
  • The smaller Elite force represents the famous Legio X later on in its service.
  • There was no enlarged First Cohort in this period.
  • Legionaries count partial protection against missile fire.
Marian Roman (Early Cohort Legions)
  • Cavalry: 2 units of 18 Veteran Medium Cavalry with spears
  • Light Horse: 2 units of 8 Veteran Light Cavalry with javelins
  • 2 Legions, each comprising 10 cohorts of Veteran Heavy Infantry with pila
  • 1 understrength Legion, comprising 5 cohorts of Veteran Heavy Infantry with pila
  • Auxiliaries: 12 Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • Auxiliaries: 12 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with slings
  • Auxiliaries: 2 units of 9 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with javelins
Notes
  • The Medium Cavalry can be various types: Roman, Spanish, Greek, Celtic etc.   The same goes for the Light Cavalry; just take whatever is most appropriate from the location.
  • See above for notes on Legions.
  • This is a "vanilla" list for the early cohort Legion, and thus covers Marius, Sulla, the Social War, the First Triumvirate and the Civil Wars.  Some more interesting local variations could include, for example, making the Light Cavalry superior quality Numidians by reducing the number of Skirmish Infantry.  Another possibility would be to reduce the numbers of Medium Cavalry and pay for Heavies instead.
Poor Quality Legions
  • Cavalry: 2 units of 18 Veteran Medium cavalry with spears
  • Light Horse: 2 units of 8 Veteran Light Cavalry with javelins
  • 3 Legions, each comprising 10 cohorts of 8 Militia Grade Heavy Infantry with pila
  • Auxiliaries: 2 units of 10 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with javelins
Notes
  • This army represents hastily raised or garrison legions that have not seen much recent combat.
  • The supporting troops can be varied by reducing numbers so as to buy better quality or other types; the auxiliaries and cavalry listed are just a representative sample.
Antony in Egypt
  • Cleruchs: 2 units of 18 Veteran Medium Cavalry with spears
  • "Tarentines": 3 units of 8 Veteran Light Cavalry with javelins
  • 2 Militia Grade Legions, each comprising 10 cohorts of 8 Heavy Infantry with pila
  • Egyptian Pikemen: 2 units of 32 Veteran Medium Infantry with pikes
  • Peltasts: 2 units of 12 Veteran Light Infantry with javelins
  • Skirmish Infantry: 2 units of 8 Veterans with bows
  • Skirmish Infantry: 2 units of 10 Veterans with javelins
We came up with this army to represent legionaries of inferior morale supported by local Egyptian troop types.

German
  • Noble Cavalry: 3 units of 18 Veteran Medium Cavalry with spears
  • Noble Warriors: 24 Elite Warriors in close formation
  • Warbands: 6 units of 36 Veteran Warriors in close formation
  • Light Infantry: 12 Veterans with javelins
  • Youths: 5 units of 8 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with javelins
  • Slingers: 10 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with slings
  • Archers: 10 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with bows
Dacian
  • Nobles: 12 Elite Medium Cavalry with spears
  • Sarmatians: 12 Veteran Cataphracts
  • Sarmatians: 12 Veteran Light Cavalry with bows
  • Nobles: 24 Elite Warriors in close formation
  • Warbands: 7 units of 32 Veteran Warriors in close formation
  • Bastarnae: 18 Superior Quality Veteran Light Infantry with falx
  • Youths: 2 units of 10 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with javelins
  • Archers: 2 units of 9 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with bows
Later Viking
  • Heavy Infantry: 4 units of 36 Veteran Heavy Infantry with spears and axes
  • Bondi: 2 units of 48 Medium Infantry with spears
  • Bondi: 48 Medium Infantry with bows and spears
  • Skirmish Infantry: 12 Veterans with bows
  • Skirmish Infantry: 12 Veterans with slings
  • Skirmish Infantry: 2 units of 14 Veterans with javelins
The Heavy Infantry are composed of a front rank of Huscarlr to stiffen the Bondi.  There are 12 Huscarlr and 24 Bondi in each of these units.  Players may instead elect to remove these units by replacing them as follows:
  • Huscarlr: 2 units of 24 Elite Heavy Infantry with axes
  • Bondi: 2 units of 48 Veteran Medium Infantry with spears
These are in addition to the other Bondi in the standard army.  Note that this is the army of the period up to 1066; hence no Berserkers.

Norman
  • Knights: 108 Veteran Heavy Lancers
  • Infantry: 180 Veteran Medium Infantry with spears
  • Archers: 18 Veteran Skirmish Infantry with bows
This is the basic suggestion for the army of 1066.  The Knights and Infantry can be split into various combinations of unit sizes.  Some of the Knights can be downgraded to Medium; they could also replace their lances with spears.  Some could be upgraded to Elite status.  This gives some more variation and may better reflect some of the contingents at Hastings.  Any points that are saved by changes to the cavalry could be spent on more infantry and/or archers, and perhaps some skirmish javelinmen.
